Prayagraj: Panic gripped the area outside the Fatehpur District Magistrate’s office campus on Wednesday after a woman, identified as Lilavati—a resident of Hasanpur Akodhiya village in Khaga—made a futile attempt to self-immolate by pouring a flammable substance on herself. However, alert policemen averted the situation and snatched away the flammable substance. Senior cops listened to her grievances and assured to look into the matter.
Incident Details
The incident occurred during the afternoon hours when Lilavati arrived at the DM office premises. According to eyewitnesses, she suddenly took out a bottle containing a flammable liquid and poured it over her head, attempting to set herself on fire. Security personnel stationed at the gate immediately rushed towards her and managed to snatch the bottle away before she could ignite it.
Police Response
The quick action by the police prevented a potential tragedy. The woman was immediately taken into custody and later brought to the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) for questioning. Senior police officials, including the SP, patiently heard her grievances. While the exact nature of her complaint is yet to be officially disclosed, sources indicate that she was seeking redressal for a land dispute and alleged harassment by some local individuals.
Assurance of Action
The SP assured Lilavati that her concerns would be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action would be taken. She was also counseled by a female police officer and advised against taking extreme steps in the future. No case has been registered against her, and she was allowed to return home after the counseling session.

In the wake of the incident, authorities have reviewed security protocols at the DM office. Additional personnel have been deployed to ensure better surveillance and prevent such occurrences in the future. The district administration has also urged citizens to approach designated help desks or grievance cells for any issues rather than resorting to drastic measures.
