Commuters in Vijayawada can look forward to a significantly faster and smoother travel experience as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially set the maximum speed limit for the upcoming West Bypass road. Vehicles will be permitted to travel at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour on this new stretch.
Official Speed Limit in Line with National Norms
An NHAI official confirmed to The Times of India that the decision to fix the speed cap at 100 kmph strictly adheres to the norms prescribed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The regulations allow for this maximum speed on national highway roads that feature four-lane or wider divided carriageways, which the West Bypass will provide.
The authority has clarified that all major obstacles that were delaying the project's completion, including issues related to high-tension electric towers, have now been nearly resolved. This paves the way for the final stages of work.
Phased Opening Leading to Full Launch in 2026
While the entire bypass is targeted to become fully operational for all vehicular traffic in the first half of 2026, a section is already benefiting drivers. The NHAI has opened the stretch under package-III, which runs from China Avutapalli to Gollapudi, for public use.
Motorists travelling between Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad are already utilising this opened section to bypass Vijayawada city traffic, reporting substantial savings in travel time. The remaining work on package-IV, from Gollapudi to Kaza, is currently being finished at a rapid pace. NHAI is also expediting the crucial bypass landing works at Kaza to give the West Bypass its final shape.
