Chennai: The TVK government's flagship women and child safety project – the Singapen Special Task Force – has started taking shape, as 18 police personnel, including two sub-inspectors from the cybercrime wing, have been posted there on deputation basis.
The transfer was ordered by the office of the director-general of police through a communication issued on May 28. According to the order, the deputation was approved following a request from the inspector-general of police of the Singapen Special Task Force. The order directed the unit officers concerned to relieve the selected personnel immediately and ensure that they reported to the IGP of the task force.
The two sub-inspectors from the cybercrime wing have expertise in cyber investigations and digital intelligence. The team also includes a head constable from Vadapalani police station and a grade-I constable from the intelligence wing of the city police, both of whom were serving on deputation in the social media cell. The remaining personnel have been drawn from various battalions of the Tamil Nadu special police, including units stationed at Avadi, Veerapuram, Kovaipudur, Ulundurpet and Sevoor.
Police sources said the deployment was part of efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the newly formed special task force. The Singapen Special Task Force is designed to address women and child safety issues comprehensively, leveraging specialized skills from various wings of the police department. With the inclusion of cybercrime experts, the task force is expected to enhance its capability to tackle online crimes against women and children, as well as traditional offenses.
The selection of personnel from diverse backgrounds, including intelligence and social media monitoring, indicates a multi-pronged approach to safety. The task force will likely focus on prevention, investigation, and community outreach. The deputation of experienced officers is seen as a critical step in operationalizing the unit, which was announced as a key initiative by the TVK government to improve public safety.
