The Shivamogga district administration has permitted the movement of light vehicles on the Hulikal Ghat section of the Thirthahalli-Kundapura State Highway-52, effective Friday. Additional Deputy Commissioner V Abhishek issued an official order to this effect.
Background of the Incident
On April 9, during ongoing roadwork at a hairpin bend in Hulikal Ghat, a 5-foot landslide occurred beneath a 12-metre-high concrete road. The loose soil unexpectedly caved in on workers, resulting in the tragic death of three construction workers. Cracks also appeared on the road surface, prompting a complete ban on all vehicular movement from Masti Katte to Hosangadi as a safety precaution. Alternative routes were arranged for commuters, and a shuttle service was later facilitated using steps near the Chandikamba Temple.
Repair and Safety Measures
Officials stated that a retaining wall has been constructed at the curve, and the road has been temporarily repaired using concrete. The decision to allow light vehicle movement was taken after reviewing reports and proposals submitted by the executive engineer of the public works department, the superintendent of police, and the regional transport officer.
Recognizing the ongoing risk of landslides in the ghat section, several precautionary measures have been implemented for public safety. These include the installation of retaining walls, warning signs, information boards, and ‘Cat’s Eyes’ and solar studs to ensure the safety of night-time commuters.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
