Ranchi MLA seeks permanent drainage solution for waterlogged areas after heavy rain
Ranchi MLA demands permanent drainage fix after rain

Ranchi: As monsoon covers most parts of the state, local MLA C P Singh has called for a permanent drainage solution for Seva Sadan Path and other vulnerable areas following Sunday's heavy rainfall. Singh wrote to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), urging a long-term fix for Seva Sadan Path and other affected locations.

Recurring Urban Challenge

“Waterlogging has become a recurring urban challenge in several parts of Ranchi. The need of the hour is a scientific and long-term solution rather than seasonal interventions. The corporation should prepare a comprehensive action plan covering all vulnerable locations in the city,” Singh said. He also requested a citywide survey of waterlogging-prone areas.

Impact on Residents and Businesses

Water accumulated on roads leading to Seva Sadan Hospital, causing inconvenience to patients and their attendants. Traders in Upper Bazaar reported that waterlogged roads affected customer movement, while residents of Harmu and Kokar highlighted clogged drains and overflowing roadside channels as persistent issues.

“Even a few hours of rain are enough to leave roads submerged. Customers avoid coming to the market when water accumulates near shops,” said Rajesh Gupta, a trader in Upper Bazaar.

Anita Devi, a resident of Harmu, added, “Water remains on the roads for hours, making commuting difficult for schoolchildren, office-goers and elderly residents.”

RMC Response and Measures

RMC officials stated that 108 potential waterlogging sites have been identified across 53 wards through surveys and field assessments. Eight wards — 15, 18, 19, 22, 28, 32, 48 and 49 — have been marked as highly sensitive.

“We have deployed 11 desilting pumps and constituted 11 quick response teams for immediate action during heavy rainfall. Pre-monsoon drain cleaning and continuous monitoring are underway, while long-term measures such as drain construction, widening and deepening have been planned at nearly 70% of identified sites,” an RMC statement read.
