Pudukottai villagers protest over power cuts, water crisis

Pudukottai: Frustrated over prolonged power outages and the resultant drinking water shortage, more than 50 residents of Chinnaiya Chathiram village in Pudukottai district held a road blockade on Sunday carrying empty water pots.

According to them, power supply has been on and off during night hours for the past 15 days, depriving families of sleep. The village, which has around 140 households, six agricultural three-phase connections and three overhead tank motors, receives power through a single transformer. Operation of water supply motors has been affected, resulting in acute water scarcity.

They said petitions to the administration and complaints to officials at Adhanakottai electricity board office have yielded no response. Police held talks with protesters, while electricity board officials assured them they would take immediate measures to rectify the fault. Though protesters withdrew the agitation, they reiterated their demand for a dedicated transformer.
