Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad police have seized and destroyed illicit liquor and related materials collectively valued at Rs 40 lakh during a special drive conducted between May 28 and June 2. The police also registered 181 cases and took action against 190 suspects in the same period.
Cases Registered Under BNS and Prohibition Act
Of these cases, 11 were registered under Section 123 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), while the remaining cases were filed under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. The intensified action followed deaths caused by the consumption of spurious liquor in Phugewadi and Dapodi areas.
Police Commissioner’s Directives
Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey has directed all police stations and the crime branch to take stringent action against suppliers and sellers of illicit country-made liquor. An officer from the crime branch stated that during the drive, the police seized and destroyed 52,000 litres of illicit country-made liquor.
Call for Public Cooperation
The officer added, “We will continue our drive against illicit liquor. If anyone has information about illegal activities in their area, they can inform the police on 112 or the Pimpri Chinchwad police control room number 9529691966.”
