Major Waste Management Upgrade for New Town Kolkata
The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is launching a significant initiative to improve waste management across the area. The authority will introduce 950 wheeled waste bins across various locations in New Town, each with a substantial 240-litre capacity to handle the growing garbage problem.
Comprehensive Waste Collection System
NKDA has decided to engage a specialized agency that will be responsible for lifting all types of waste and systematically transporting it to the designated disposal site at Dhapa. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to modernize the waste management infrastructure in the rapidly developing area.
According to official statements, the authorities had already taken proactive steps by procuring 1,000 new waste bins just last week. These new bins will primarily serve as replacements for the damaged containers currently in use, ensuring that the waste collection system remains efficient and hygienic.
Growing Waste Challenge and Future Projections
The scale of the waste management challenge is substantial, with officials revealing that New Town currently generates close to 90 tonnes of waste daily. This massive amount of garbage requires systematic handling and proper disposal to maintain urban cleanliness and environmental standards.
The appointed agency will deploy multiple resources to manage this operation effectively. This includes loaders, trippers, and an adequate number of labourers specifically tasked with waste lifting and transportation to Dhapa, all operating under strict guidelines and direction from NKDA.
Officials have issued an important warning about future waste generation trends. They indicated that the amount of daily generated waste is expected to increase nearly three times in the near future. This projection stems from the inclusion of New Town's neighborhood areas, which fall under both NKDA and Hidco planning areas, into the solid waste integration plan.
Looking ahead, NKDA has revealed more comprehensive plans for sustainable waste management. The authority is working on establishing waste processing and recycling plants in the action areas, marking a significant step toward more environmentally responsible waste handling practices for the growing urban center.
