A 25-year-old man from Maghdasarai village under Deepnagar police station in Nalanda district died by suicide on Friday night, allegedly after being tortured by moneylenders. The deceased, Santosh Kumar, worked as a decorator and was married. He consumed poison after facing continuous threats and harassment despite repaying his loans with interest.
Video appeal before death
Before his death, Santosh recorded a video naming the accused and appealing for justice. In the video, he alleged that he had taken loans from Virmani Yadav and Manoj Yadav of Golapur, and Pintu Yadav of Lalbagh. He claimed that even after repaying the full amount with interest, they continued to mentally harass him and issue threats.
In his final message, Santosh appealed to Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, MLA Shrawan Kumar, and local representatives, seeking justice in the matter.
Family files FIR
Santosh's brother, Akash Kumar, said that when Santosh's condition deteriorated, he called him and informed that he had consumed a poisonous substance, asking to be taken to the hospital. He was rushed for treatment but died during treatment. His father, Upendra Malakar, said Santosh had been under severe stress for some time and was frequently abused and threatened over phone calls by the moneylenders.
The brother has filed an FIR in this regard.
Police investigation underway
Deepnagar Station House Officer (SHO) Suman Kumar said the viral video has been taken as evidence and a detailed investigation is underway. Based on the family's complaint and the video, strict legal action will be taken against the accused.
Separate incident of suicide attempt
In another incident, a woman from a Nalanda village allegedly consumed a poisonous substance in a fit of anger after a family member scolded her son. She was admitted to Bhagwan Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences (BMIMS), where her condition is reported to be stable.
