A critical road stretch in North Nagpur, already the site of a recent fatal accident, has been labeled a 'death trap' by local educationists, who warn it poses a severe daily threat to hundreds of schoolchildren. The dangerous conditions have emerged due to ongoing demolition and construction work for a major elevated corridor project.
Educationist Sounds Alarm Over 'Death Trap'
Dr. Vinky Rughwani, chairman of the Sindhi Hindi Vidya Samiti and a noted paediatrician, has issued a grave warning regarding the rapidly deteriorating road between Kamal Chowk and Pachpaoli police station. His urgent appeal follows a tragic incident on Saturday, where a man lost his life after being struck by a bridge contractor's tanker on the same route.
Dr. Rughwani emphasized that the road has become perilous for all, but is particularly unsuitable for minors. The Sindhi Hindi Vidya Samiti manages a junior college, three high schools, and three junior schools in the Balabhaupeth area. According to Dr. Rughwani, an estimated 500 to 1,000 students from these institutions are forced to navigate this hazardous stretch every single day to reach their classrooms.
Flyover Construction Creates Perilous Path
The root cause of the danger is the ambitious 998 crore Indora to Dighori elevated corridor project being executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The project involves demolishing the old Pachpaoli flyover and constructing a new 14-km-long structure from Kamal Chowk to Reshimbagh Square.
The construction activities have left the road below in a shambles. It is now riddled with deep potholes, scattered debris, uneven surfaces, and pools of stagnant water. This has exacerbated traffic chaos and significantly heightened risks for pedestrians in this densely populated locality, turning a daily commute into a dangerous ordeal.
Parents and Management Demand Immediate Action
Frustrated parents and institution representatives are now calling on authorities to wake up and prioritize safety. They have urged the NHAI, local traffic police, and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to take immediate corrective measures.
A central demand is that the contractors involved in the flyover project must take full responsibility for maintaining safe passage on the road during the construction period. Parents stress that without swift and decisive action, more lives—especially those of vulnerable children—could be tragically lost. The community's plea is clear: safety cannot be compromised for infrastructure development, and protective measures must be implemented without delay.
