In a decisive move to tackle a persistent civic menace, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has sanctioned a major Rs 7 crore project to construct a dedicated storm water pipeline. This infrastructure aims to deliver a long-term resolution to the severe waterlogging and flooding that has disrupted life in several sectors for more than ten years during the monsoon season.
A Comprehensive Drainage Solution
Officials stated that the detailed estimate covers the installation of an integrated drainage system along the 100-ft wide road stretching from Mataur Chowk, located near the electric grid substation, all the way to the N Choe. This new pipeline is designed to efficiently channel and dispose of excess rainwater originating from Phase 3B2, Phase VII, and neighboring localities, including surface runoff flowing in from Chandigarh. The project's design has been formulated to account for increased urban runoff expected from the region's rapid development.
Ending Years of Resident Hardship
For over a decade, residents in these areas have endured immense suffering each rainy season. Storm water would accumulate on roads, bringing traffic to a standstill, and often invade homes and compounds during heavy downpours. Despite numerous complaints and assurances from authorities, the absence of a proper, integrated drainage network led to recurring property damage and created unhygienic conditions, posing significant health risks to the community.
Official Assurance and Resident Hope
Acknowledging the severity of the issue, the MC finally progressed towards this permanent fix. The pipeline will direct rainwater straight into the N Choe, effectively preventing overflow and stagnation on streets and in residential areas. MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh emphasized that the demand for this pipeline was a long-standing one, consistently raised by both residents and local councillors.
"This was a long-standing demand. Work will begin soon, and once completed, it will provide major relief to residents who suffered for years during monsoon," Commissioner Singh stated. Residents have welcomed the approval, expressing hope that this Rs 7 crore initiative will finally put an end to the annual cycle of flooding and significantly improve living conditions and safety in the affected sectors of Mohali.
