Nimgool Village Takes Stand Against Fraudulent Spiritual Healers
In a significant move towards rational thinking and community safety, the residents of Nimgool village in Dhule taluka, Nashik district, have collectively decided to reject unscientific solutions for health, financial, or emotional problems. This resolution was formally adopted during a village meeting held on Sunday, organized under the guidance of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS).
Empowering Women to Combat Exploitation
The decision specifically targets individuals who claim to possess divine, religious, or spiritual powers for healing or advising. Village women, who spearheaded this initiative, have vowed not to permit such practitioners to operate within their community. They plan to actively remind these individuals about the provisions of the Black Magic Act, which criminalizes fraudulent practices under the guise of spirituality.
This proactive step comes in the wake of the arrest of local astrologer Ashok Kharat, who allegedly deceived villagers by pretending to have supernatural abilities. Kharat is accused of cheating people and sexually exploiting women under the pretext of resolving their personal issues.
Voices from the Village: A Call for Awareness and Safety
Sindhubai More, a resident of Nimgool, highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by women. "Women endure numerous challenges—financial struggles, social pressures, family conflicts, and health concerns. When overwhelmed, they might seek help from dubious sources and fall into traps," she explained. The meeting aimed to spread awareness and equip women with knowledge about their rights regarding personal safety.
Vidyabai More, another villager, emphasized the need for stringent action and self-vigilance. "Kharat deserves no mercy. Simultaneously, we women must avoid such traps. We have resolved that while anyone can visit our village, no one should prescribe unscientific methods for relief," she stated firmly.
Grassroots Awareness Campaigns and Practical Solutions
The women of Nimgool, primarily engaged in farming alongside their families, are committed to conducting regular awareness sessions in the village. Their approach is not about banning all religious figures but distinguishing between genuine spiritual guides and fraudsters.
Sangeeta Patil clarified, "We do not intend to stop all religious visitors. Instead, we will engage with those organizing such programs, educating them on the difference between truly enlightened individuals and those falsely claiming spiritual powers."
Furthermore, the community plans to assist residents in finding legitimate solutions to their problems. Health issues will be addressed through proper medical systems, while financial concerns will be directed to appropriate institutions, ensuring a shift towards evidence-based support.
