Madurai witnessed heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon, leading to widespread waterlogging across the city. Several roads were submerged, causing significant inconvenience to commuters, particularly those on two-wheelers who found themselves stranded in knee-deep water.
Key Areas Affected
The road beneath the Madurai–Natham bridge was particularly hard hit, with water covering the stretch for several kilometers. This key traffic artery came to a near standstill as vehicles struggled to navigate the flooded streets. Even two hours after the rain ceased, the roads remained waterlogged, highlighting the drainage issues in the area.
Other severely affected localities included Goripalayam, Madurai Junction railway station, and Narimedu, where flooding disrupted daily activities and movement.
Regional Rainfall Impact
Heavy downpours were also reported in the neighboring districts of Kanyakumari and Tenkasi. In response to the continuous rain, authorities have maintained the bathing ban at the popular Courtallam waterfalls to ensure visitor safety.
Dam Water Levels
According to official reports, the water level at Papanasam dam, which has a maximum capacity of 143 feet, currently stands at 88 feet. It is expected to rise to around 100 feet by Friday evening due to the inflow from the rains.
