Madurai Stormwater Project to Affect 108 Families Temporarily
Madurai Stormwater Project Hits 108 Families

Madurai's first integrated stormwater drainage project is expected to temporarily affect the livelihoods of 108 families during construction around three high-priority hotspots: the Meenakshi Amman Temple, South Masi Street, and the Periyar bus stand.

Social Impact Assessment Findings

The project's social impact assessment revealed that 98 shop owners and 10 roadside vendors could face temporary income loss while drains are built and existing networks are desilted. Corporation officials have stated that measures will be taken to minimize disruption to businesses during construction.

Mitigation Measures

Access to all 98 shops will be maintained throughout the project period. An official explained that the 10 roadside vendors identified in the survey will be permitted to shift temporarily to the non-working side of the road so that business activities can continue.

The report also noted that no private land acquisition is required, as all work is planned within road margins. It found no need for physical relocation or permanent economic displacement. Eligible affected shopkeepers would be entitled to compensation and assistance of around ₹9 lakh under the social management framework adopted for the project.
