The Municipal Corporation (MC) of Ludhiana has officially launched a comprehensive door-to-door cow dung collection initiative at the Haibowal dairy complex, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the heavily polluted Buddha Dariya water body. This proactive measure aims to tackle the long-standing issue of dairy waste disposal that has plagued the area for years.
Contractor-Led Collection System Operational
Under the newly implemented system, a hired contractor has commenced operations, with staff members actively collecting cow dung directly from individual dairy units within the complex. The collected waste is being systematically transported to a designated site identified by the civic body, ensuring proper handling and management from the outset.
Three-Year Tender and Commissioner's Guidance
The civic body has allocated a three-year tender specifically for the door-to-door lifting of cow dung, a project initiated under the guidance of outgoing MC commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal. This long-term commitment underscores the seriousness of the pollution problem and the MC's dedication to finding a sustainable solution.
Preventing Pollution in Buddha Dariya
Officials have emphasized that the primary objective of this initiative is to prevent dairy waste, particularly cow dung, from being dumped into sewer lines or directly into Buddha Dariya. For a considerable time, such practices have contributed significantly to the pollution levels in the water body, affecting both the environment and local communities.
Strict Actions and Legal Proceedings
In addition to the collection efforts, MC officials have announced that teams will be deployed in the coming days to clear any cow dung lying openly within the dairy complex. They have also issued a stern warning, stating that strict action will be taken against anyone found dumping cow dung in sewer lines or Buddha Dariya. For repeated violations, the civic body plans to initiate stringent legal proceedings to enforce compliance.
Appeal for Cooperation from Dairy Owners
Officials have made a heartfelt appeal to dairy owners, urging them to cooperate fully with the new system and immediately cease dumping waste into drains or the water body. They stressed that the ambitious goal of rejuvenating Buddha Dariya cannot be achieved without the active support and participation of residents and dairy operators, highlighting the collective responsibility in this environmental endeavor.
Addressing a Persistent Issue
It was noted that cow dung disposal has been a persistent and challenging issue for dairy units in the area, often leading to unsanitary conditions and environmental degradation. With the new door-to-door collection system now operational, officials expressed optimism that people will experience some much-needed relief, paving the way for a cleaner and healthier environment in Ludhiana.
