Karnataka Intensifies Forest Surveillance After Tragic Leopard Attack at MM Hills
In the wake of a devastating incident where a leopard claimed the life of a pilgrim at the foothills of Male Mahadeshwara Hills (MM Hills) in Chamarajanagar district, the Karnataka Forest Department has significantly ramped up its security measures across the region. This tragic event has prompted urgent action to prevent further human-wildlife conflicts, especially with major festivals on the horizon.
Drone Cameras Deployed for Enhanced Monitoring
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has issued directives for the deployment of drone cameras to meticulously monitor pilgrim movement along forest routes. This decision comes shortly after the district administration permitted pilgrims to trek through these paths between 7 am and 4 pm daily. The drones are intended to provide real-time surveillance, ensuring that any wildlife activity is detected promptly to alert trekkers.
Focus on Pilgrim Safety During Festive Seasons
During a review of the human-wildlife conflict situation at MM Hills ahead of the Shivarathri festival, Minister Khandre emphasized the critical need to prioritize pilgrim safety. He highlighted that large numbers of devotees visit the hills during significant festivals such as Shivarathri, Ugadi, and Deepavali, with many undertaking forest treks as part of their religious rituals.
"This marks the first such unfortunate incident in the area, making it imperative to implement robust safety measures," Khandre stated. "By installing drone cameras along trekking routes and issuing timely alerts about wildlife movements, we aim to safeguard all pilgrims."
Addressing Staff Shortages with Additional Personnel
Acknowledging the severe staff shortages within the forest department, the minister has instructed officials to mobilize home guards and local volunteers. These individuals will work under the supervision of forest guards and watchers to patrol the trekking routes, thereby bolstering on-ground security presence.
Funding for Enhanced Security Arrangements
To cover the additional expenses associated with these enhanced security measures, Khandre has proposed that the Sri Malai Mahadeshwaraswamy Kshethra Development Authority could provide the necessary funds. Officials have been directed to formally request financial support from the district administration to ensure the seamless implementation of these safety protocols.
The forest department's proactive steps underscore a commitment to balancing religious practices with wildlife conservation, aiming to create a safer environment for all visitors to MM Hills.
