The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has called on Bangladesh to accelerate the verification of nationality requests to facilitate the deportation of illegal foreign nationals from India. This comes as part of ongoing bilateral efforts to address illegal migration.
Deportation Statistics from the United States
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, a total of 1,076 Indian citizens have been deported from the United States so far in 2026. This marks a significant decrease from the 3,567 deportations recorded during the previous year. The MEA emphasized that India and the US are actively discussing migration and mobility issues, with a focus on curbing illegal migration while ensuring that legal migration remains unaffected.
Bilateral Verification Mechanism
Regarding illegal foreign nationals present in India, including those from Bangladesh, the MEA stated that existing laws are being applied. Deportations are carried out through a bilateral verification mechanism that requires nationality confirmation from the respective country. India has urged Bangladesh to expedite pending nationality verification requests to streamline the deportation process and ensure smoother implementation.
The MEA's remarks highlight the importance of cooperation between neighboring countries in managing migration flows and upholding legal frameworks. The issue remains a priority for both nations as they work to balance security concerns with humanitarian considerations.
