In a significant push for sustainable transport, Gurgaon is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with the addition of 20 new public charging stations. The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has formalised an agreement with a private firm to install these facilities across key locations in the city.
Public-Private Partnership for Green Mobility
The initiative follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MCG and Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL). Under this partnership, CESL will undertake the complete responsibility for installing the charging points, securing electricity connections, and managing their ongoing operation and maintenance. Crucially, this model places no financial burden on the civic body.
Officials stated that the stations will be strategically placed in major markets and community centres to ensure maximum public access in high-footfall zones. While the exact spots are still being finalised, the focus is on convenience for residents. "We signed the MoU and will soon roll out the exact locations for the residents," confirmed an MCG official aware of the developments.
A Step Towards a Cleaner Gurgaon
MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya emphasised the broader vision behind this move. He described it as a vital step towards promoting green mobility, which will lead to substantial fuel savings and a marked reduction in air pollution. "This will help in developing the city as clean, environment-friendly and aligned with future needs," Dahiya said. He further urged residents to embrace electric vehicles, highlighting that robust charging infrastructure is fundamental for a sustainable urban transport ecosystem.
This project is a direct component of Gurgaon's annual clean air plan for the fiscal year 2025-26. The civic body's assessment identified a requirement for 20 additional EV stations as of December 31, 2025. The plan sets a clear deadline, aiming to have all these stations operational by December 31, 2026.
Broader Strategy to Combat Pollution
The EV charging network is just one part of a multi-pronged strategy outlined by MCG to improve air quality. The comprehensive clean air plan includes several other key actions:
- Augmentation of city bus services to reduce private vehicle usage.
- Deployment of additional sprinkling machines and procurement of large and medium mechanical road sweeping machines (MRSMs) to control dust.
- Planting native Indian shrubs on unpaved surfaces to prevent dust pollution.
- A target to process all legacy waste by March 2028.
- A commitment to make 300 roads, spanning over 3,500 kilometres, dust-free.
The establishment of these 20 EV charging stations represents a concrete move towards modernising Gurgaon's urban infrastructure. By easing range anxiety for EV owners and encouraging more citizens to make the switch, the city aims to fuel its growth with cleaner, greener energy.
