Gurgaon Drive Clears Slum Clusters at Jail Chowk After Complaints
Gurgaon Anti-Encroachment Drive Clears Slum Clusters

A coordinated anti-encroachment operation conducted by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), and local police on Wednesday successfully cleared illegally developed slum clusters from government land surrounding Jail Chowk. This action came in response to persistent complaints lodged by residents and market associations concerning public nuisance, safety hazards, and traffic disruptions in the area.

Reclaimed Land and Removed Encroachments

The operation reclaimed encroached HSVP land and eliminated illegal occupations from the GMDA road network in the vicinity. During the drive, authorities discovered that rain baseras (night shelters) constructed by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) had been overrun by encroachments and were being used to shelter cattle instead of their intended purpose.

Relocation of Night Shelters

Officials confirmed that encroachments within the shelters were removed, and the MCG has been instructed to relocate these facilities to a more suitable location. This move aims to ensure that the rain baseras can fulfill their original goal of providing public welfare services to the homeless.

Expected Traffic Improvements

The clearance of these encroachments is anticipated to enhance traffic flow along Old Railway Road and Jail Road, which had been severely impacted by the illegal structures and associated activities.

Resident Complaints and Safety Concerns

The enforcement action followed sustained grievances from local residents, who had raised their concerns through formal representations and social media platforms. They highlighted the prolonged presence of encroachments and the myriad problems stemming from them.

According to officials, residents alleged that the area had become a hub for nuisance activities, including open consumption of alcohol and other intoxicants. Some complainants also reported that children from the settlement would approach motorists, seeking money under the pretext of minor accidents or injuries. Additionally, allegations of theft and robbery in the vicinity had further escalated safety and security concerns among the community.

Official Statement

“The action undertaken was in response to persistent complaints received from citizens regarding the encroachments and the associated nuisance in the area. The illegal occupation of government land had become a matter of serious concern for residents,” stated RS Batth, nodal officer for encroachments and district town planner, GMDA.
