In a significant move to support rural working mothers, a pioneering childcare centre has been inaugurated in the Kalaburagi district of Karnataka. This first-of-its-kind facility, named 'Makkala Mane', is a joint initiative by the Azim Premji Foundation and Seva Sangam Samaj Seva Sangh.
A Safe Haven for Rural Working Mothers
The centre is located in Ijeri village within Jewargi taluk and is designed specifically for agricultural workers and daily wage labourers. It allows parents, especially mothers, to leave their children, aged from 7 months up to 3 years old, in a safe and nurturing environment while they are at work. The facility operates daily from 9 am to 5 pm, aligning with typical working hours in the region.
Comprehensive Care and Development
The childcare centre offers a holistic program aimed at the well-being and early development of toddlers. Each centre will be managed by two trained in-charges. The daily schedule includes providing nutritious meals such as porridge, khichdi, and sweets. Beyond basic care, the initiative focuses on early childhood stimulation through games, songs, and dance activities.
Dr. Ajay Singh, Chairman of the KKRDB, highlighted the project's importance. He stated that the scheme is a boon for mothers in rural areas and urged agricultural labourers and workers to utilise the facility. He emphasised that such care is essential for the proper progress and development of young children.
Expansion Plans for the Region
This centre in Ijeri village is just the beginning. Authorities have prepared a three-year plan to expand this model across the district. There is a concrete proposal to open approximately 40 more childcare centres in the coming days across Jewargi and Yadrami taluks. This expansion promises to extend the critical support system to hundreds more families in rural Karnataka, enabling parents to work with peace of mind and ensuring their children receive foundational care and education.
The launch of 'Makkala Mane' marks a transformative step in addressing the childcare challenges faced by India's rural workforce, setting a precedent for community-focused development projects.
