Madurai Disability Rights Activists Stage Protest Over Union Budget Neglect
In a significant display of dissent, around 40 individuals with disabilities organized a protest at Arapalayam Cross Road in Madurai on Thursday evening. The demonstration was spearheaded by the Tamil Nadu All Types of Persons with Disabilities and Caregivers Rights Association (TARATDAC), who voiced strong allegations that the recent Union Budget has failed to adequately address their welfare and fundamental rights.
Budget Criticized for Lack of Concrete Measures
A Balamurugan, the district secretary of TARATDAC, articulated the group's grievances, stating that the budget document lacks substantive provisions for persons with disabilities. He emphasized that the allocation appears to weaken existing support systems rather than strengthening them. "There is a noticeable reduction in funding for the 100-day employment scheme, and there is no clear financial commitment to implement the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act or to enhance accessibility and support services," Balamurugan remarked.
Inadequate Pension Scheme and Employment Opportunities
Further criticism was directed at the central government for not revising the assistance provided under the Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme, which remains stagnant at Rs 300 per month. "In the current economic climate, this amount is grossly inadequate and requires urgent revision," Balamurugan asserted. He also highlighted that the budget does not prioritize creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, a key area of concern for the community.
Demands for Enhanced Budgetary Allocation
The association has put forth a set of demands calling for increased budgetary allocation specifically targeted at welfare schemes and employment generation initiatives. They are advocating for the effective implementation of disability rights legislation across the nation to ensure equitable access and support. The protest underscores a broader call for the government to prioritize the needs of persons with disabilities in its fiscal planning and policy execution.
