In a novel bid to promote traffic discipline, the district transport department in Dhubri, Assam, has launched a unique campaign blending appreciation with enforcement. As part of the nationwide National Road Safety Month starting January 1, authorities are now offering rose sticks to motorcycle riders who adhere to traffic rules and wear helmets.
A Sweet Start to the New Year for Compliant Riders
The inaugural event of this month-long programme was officially kicked off today on Guru Teg Bahadur Road. Dhubri District Transport Officer, Dibyajyoti Das, explained the thoughtful approach to TOI. He stated that the department decided to wish riders following road rules a happy new year by offering them roses. This positive reinforcement aims to create a lasting impression about the importance of safety.
However, the campaign is not all about rewards. Das was quick to add that the department is also imposing fines on those violating traffic rules. This two-pronged strategy seeks to encourage good behavior while strictly discouraging negligence on the roads.
Comprehensive Programme for Public Awareness
The rose distribution is just one facet of a broader awareness drive planned by the transport department. A series of engaging activities have been organized to spread the message of road safety across the community. The planned initiatives include:
- Quiz competitions to test and improve public knowledge.
- Street plays to convey messages in an entertaining and relatable format.
- Distribution of educational pamphlets detailing crucial road safety measures.
- A rally to generate public participation and visibility for the cause.
Police Join Forces with Reflector Tape Initiative
Parallel to the transport department's efforts, Dhubri Police have also launched their own road safety awareness drive, focusing on the hazardous National Highway 17. Considering the prevailing foggy winter conditions, which severely reduce visibility, police are taking a proactive step.
They are sticking reflector tape on bikes, three-wheelers, and other vehicles. This simple yet highly effective measure ensures vehicles are more visible from a distance, thereby helping to prevent accidents during early mornings and late evenings when fog is most dense. This initiative highlights a practical approach to tackling seasonal road safety challenges.
The combined efforts of the Dhubri transport department and police underscore a committed push towards safer roads as the new year begins. By mixing innovative rewards with strict penalties and practical solutions, they hope to significantly reduce accidents and foster a culture of responsible driving in the region.
