Dhubri's Green Revolution: Urban Forest & STP Transform Assam Town
Dhubri Gets Urban Forest & Sewage Plant in Major Facelift

The town of Dhubri in Assam is undergoing a significant environmental and infrastructural transformation, spearheaded by its local civic body. A series of development projects, including the creation of an urban forest and a crucial sewage treatment plant, are reshaping the urban landscape and aiming to protect the mighty Brahmaputra river.

Green Initiatives Take Root

One of the flagship projects involves developing an urban forest on abundant land belonging to the railways. This green lung is set to enhance the town's biodiversity and provide residents with a natural retreat. In a parallel move to combat pollution, the Dhubri Municipal Board is constructing a sewage treatment plant (STP). This facility is designed to clean dirty drain water before it is discharged into the Brahmaputra, addressing a critical environmental concern for the riverine town.

A Four-Year Facelift for the Town

These projects are part of a broader development push undertaken since the present Municipal Board came to power on April 7, 2022. The board has utilized funds received under the 15th and 16th Finance Commissions to execute a variety of public works. Over the last four years, several public parks have been renovated, giving a fresh look to the town's recreational spaces.

The renovated parks include:

  • Srimanta Sankardev Sishu Udyan
  • Netaji Park
  • Queen Victoria Park

Additionally, a new Clock Tower has been constructed, adding to the town's landmarks. To address essential utilities, the board is actively laying drinking water supply pipelines in nine out of the town's 16 wards.

Fostering Art and a Unique First

Beyond infrastructure, the board has also launched a unique cultural initiative. A wall magazine named "Canvas-Dhubri" was recently unveiled at Swahid Bedi Park. This magazine is dedicated to budding poets, artists, authors, and individuals involved in literary works, providing them a platform to showcase their talent focusing on art, culture, and heritage.

Dhubri district guardian minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass formally inaugurated the magazine. He stated that this was the first wall magazine of its kind in Assam launched by any municipal board or town committee.

Speaking about the progress, Municipal Board chairman Debamoy Sanyal told TOI that while several development works have been completed and others are nearing completion, the vision for Dhubri continues to grow. He expressed plans to introduce more beautification measures in the coming years, signaling an ongoing commitment to the town's upliftment and sustainable development.
