A devastating fire at the Flourish Stay Bed and Breakfast in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area on May 3 has claimed 21 lives and left 20 others severely injured. The tragedy has exposed a litany of safety violations, including illegal construction, a locked terrace, absence of a fire safety certificate, a single entry and exit point, and no basic firefighting systems.
Illegal Construction and Locked Exits
The hotel, operating as a bed and breakfast, had illegally constructed additional rooms, reducing safe evacuation routes. The terrace, which could have served as a refuge, was locked, trapping victims. Fire officials confirmed that the building lacked a valid fire safety certificate, a mandatory requirement for commercial establishments.
Single Entry and Exit Point
With only one entry and exit point, guests and staff had no alternative escape route when the fire broke out. This bottleneck contributed to the high casualty count. Survivors reported that smoke quickly filled the corridors, and many could not find their way out in the chaos.
Absence of Firefighting Systems
The hotel had no sprinklers, fire alarms, or extinguishers. Firefighters had to break through locked doors to reach trapped individuals. The lack of basic firefighting equipment meant the fire spread rapidly, overwhelming the building within minutes.
Foreign Nationals Among Victims
At least nine of the 18 identified victims were foreign nationals who had come to India for medical treatment at the nearby Max Hospital. The tragedy has raised questions about the safety of accommodation facilities catering to medical tourists.
Ignored Warnings
Reports indicate that multiple warnings about safety violations had been issued to the hotel management over the past year. However, no corrective action was taken. The local municipal corporation and fire department had conducted inspections but failed to enforce compliance.
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety norms in commercial buildings across Delhi. Authorities have arrested the hotel owner and launched a detailed investigation into the lapses.
