In a significant crackdown on unauthorized mineral extraction, government authorities in Chhattisgarh seized three excavators and a heavy vehicle during a raid on alleged illegal sand mining operations in Gariyaband district late Monday. The action marks an intensification of the state government's efforts to curb illegal mining, transportation, and storage of minerals.
Joint Inspection Uncovers Violations
The operation was carried out by a joint team comprising the state mining department's central flying squad and district-level officials during an inspection at Kuruskera village in Rajim tehsil. According to officials, the team discovered sand being excavated from the Pairi river using heavy machinery, in clear violation of mining regulations. Acting under the provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, the officials seized and sealed three excavators allegedly involved in the illegal operation.
Vehicle Seized and Legal Action Initiated
In addition to the excavators, a Hyva truck suspected of transporting illegally mined sand was also seized. The vehicle has been parked at Rajim police station for further legal proceedings. Officials have issued notices to the mine operator and the owners of the machinery, seeking their explanations regarding the alleged violations.
Ongoing State-Wide Drive Against Illegal Mining
This raid is part of an ongoing state-wide drive against illegal mining, transportation, and storage of minerals. Unauthorized sand extraction has been a recurring concern in several districts, particularly along riverbeds where mechanized mining is either prohibited or strictly regulated. The mining department has stated that inspections and enforcement drives have been intensified to curb illegal extraction and prevent revenue losses to the state exchequer.
Chief Minister's Stance
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai reiterated the government's commitment to protecting natural resources and ensuring that mineral wealth is utilized in accordance with the law. He emphasized that strict action would continue against those involved in illegal mining and transportation activities.
