CESC Cuts Power to 10 Unauthorised Buildings in Tiljala

Kolkata: In a major crackdown on illegal constructions, CESC on Wednesday disconnected electricity supply to at least 10 buildings in the Tiljala area. The action was taken following a government directive to conduct an audit and sever power supplies to all unauthorised buildings in the city.

Previous Disconnection and Fire Incident

On Tuesday, the utility permanently disconnected supply at 50/1-D/1, GJ Khan Road, after a fire broke out in a factory located in the four-storey building the same day. The incident highlighted the dangers posed by illegal structures.

Inspections in Other Areas

CESC also conducted inspections in Ekbalpore and disconnected supply to one building there. A CESC official stated, 'Seven teams carried out inspections in Tiljala on Wednesday, and supply was disconnected on safety grounds. The inspections will continue as per the government directive. We are working in coordination with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), which has to identify unauthorised and illegal buildings.'

In addition to electricity disconnection, the KMC has been asked to sever water supply lines to illegal structures across the city, particularly in areas like Kasba, Mominpore, Tiljala, and Ekbalpore.

The joint operation aims to eliminate hazardous unauthorised buildings that pose risks to residents and violate municipal norms. Further inspections are expected in the coming days.
