Aizawl: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday informed Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma that the Centre will provide rice worth Rs 10 crore for refugees taking shelter in the state, an official statement said on Saturday.
During their meeting at Kartavya Bhawan in Delhi, Lalduhoma apprised Shah of nearly 40,000 refugees from Manipur, Bangladesh, and Myanmar who have already taken refuge in Mizoram. He added that his government has been making every possible effort to provide humanitarian assistance to them, while emphasising the urgent need for support from the Centre.
The Chief Minister further pointed out that unlike other northeastern states, Mizoram has not been receiving assistance under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme due to its insurgency-free society. According to the statement, Lalduhoma requested the Union Home Minister to extend funding to Mizoram as well, since the state has been perennially combating drug trafficking and cybercrime.
Shah urged the state government, led by Lalduhoma, to submit more project proposals under the PM-DeVINE (Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region) scheme and assured his support.
