The Bengaluru West City Corporation (BWCC) has taken a concrete step to address the issue of stray dogs in institutional areas by identifying three specific locations to establish dedicated shelters. This action is a direct response to a Supreme Court order mandating the relocation of such animals.
Three Proposed Locations for New Shelters
In an official statement released on Friday, the civic body revealed the sites it has selected for the project. The proposed locations are the Central Relief Committee land near Summanahalli, a section of the Jnanabharati campus of Bangalore University, and the premises of the now-closed Mysore Lamp Works in Malleswaram. A formal proposal regarding the handover of these sites has been submitted to the state government for necessary approvals.
Immediate Action on Identified Canines
The decision was solidified during a meeting that included 13 animal welfare organisations, three ABC–ARV (Animal Birth Control – Anti-Rabies Vaccination) service providers, and various government officials. BWCC Commissioner Rajendra KV stated that the corporation has already identified 202 stray dogs residing in institutional zones. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that these dogs must be shifted immediately to the designated shelters and centres in full compliance with existing regulations.
Compliance and Community Involvement
This initiative underscores the civic body's effort to balance public safety with humane animal management. By engaging with multiple animal welfare groups and service providers, the BWCC aims to ensure the process is carried out effectively. The move to establish specific shelters is seen as a structured approach to implement the Supreme Court's directive, providing a controlled environment for the animals while addressing community concerns in areas like universities and government complexes.
