A tragic shooting incident near Simbal Chowk in Batala, Gurdaspur, has claimed a second life. Kanwaljit Singh, a gun house owner, succumbed to his injuries late Friday night while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Amritsar. His brother, Jagjit Singh, remains in critical condition and is receiving medical care at the same facility.
Details of the Incident
The altercation, which occurred on Friday, stemmed from a dispute over giving way to a vehicle. The confrontation involved Nihang Singh, Deepinder Singh, and the two brothers, Kanwaljit Singh and Jagjit Singh. During the heated exchange, gunfire erupted, resulting in Deepinder Singh being killed on the spot. The two brothers sustained severe injuries and were immediately referred to Amritsar for advanced treatment. Kanwaljit Singh later died from his wounds.
Victim's Family Speaks Out
Deepinder Singh's father, Jasbir Singh, expressed his grief and confusion, stating that his son had no personal enmity with anyone. He highlighted that Deepinder was actively involved in social service and ran a de-addiction centre. In an emotional appeal, he questioned the motive behind the killing.
Police Investigation and Recoveries
According to police sources, three pistols were recovered from the crime scene. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Batala, Mehtab Singh, described the incident as a case of road rage. He noted that a sudden flare-up of tempers escalated into a gun battle. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Police reports indicate that the dispute began over crossing of vehicles. During a heated argument, a youth traveling in a Toyota Fortuner allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired two to three shots. Deepinder Singh then reportedly returned fire with his licensed pistol, injuring one of the Fortuner occupants. Nearly 15 rounds were fired in total. Police have recovered 9-10 spent cartridge cases from the scene.
