Vijayawada: Municipal administration minister Ponguru Narayana has announced that best practices from Malaysia in solid waste management, recycling, scientific landfill operations, and affordable housing will be studied and implemented in Andhra Pradesh after suitable modifications.
Two-Day Visit Focuses on Urban Management
During his two-day visit to Malaysia, Narayana focused on understanding advanced urban management systems adopted by Malaysian cities. He stated that Malaysia's technology-driven solutions, efficient waste management mechanisms, and sustainable housing models would provide valuable inputs for strengthening urban infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in Amaravati.
Narayana, accompanied by principal secretary Suresh Kumar, interacted with Malaysian officials and experts on various aspects of urban development. The minister visited the KDEB waste management office in Selangor, where officials gave a detailed presentation on systems for solid waste collection, transportation, segregation, and scientific processing. The officials explained methods used to manage waste generated from households, commercial establishments, and industries.
Waste Segregation and Recycling Studied
Narayana studied Malaysia's waste segregation practices, recycling mechanisms, use of technology in waste management, and the role of public participation in maintaining cleanliness. He also inspected various waste management facilities dealing with biomedical waste, industrial waste, and poultry waste. The minister discussed waste treatment methods, environmental protection measures, recycling processes, and energy generation from waste with experts. He said such systems would be useful in improving waste management practices in Andhra Pradesh's urban areas.
Visit to Sanitary Landfill Facility
Narayana visited the Bukit Tagar Enviro Park in Selangor, one of Malaysia's largest sanitary landfill facilities. Officials explained the scientific methods adopted there for disposing of solid waste while ensuring soil and groundwater remain protected. The minister studied how the facility manages waste in an environmentally safe manner and prevents pollution through modern landfill technologies. He said such scientific approaches could help Andhra Pradesh develop more efficient and eco-friendly waste disposal systems.
Focus on Affordable Housing
Apart from waste management, the minister also focused on affordable housing models during the visit. He inspected housing projects developed by Berjaya group, which are aimed at providing quality homes at affordable prices. He also held discussions with representatives of Sunway and Gamuda projects regarding urban housing and infrastructure development.
Narayana said chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is keen to develop cleaner cities, strengthen environmental protection, and provide better living standards for urban residents. He added that a blueprint for modern waste management strategies and affordable housing initiatives in the state would be prepared.
