Prayagraj Magh Mela 2024: AI & 1600 Cameras to Manage 15 Crore Devotees
AI, 1600 Cameras to Secure Prayagraj's Magh Mela Crowd

Prayagraj is deploying a massive tech-driven security blanket for the upcoming 44-day Magh Mela, anticipating an unprecedented influx of over 15 crore devotees. The spiritual gathering, commencing on January 3, will see the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) play a pivotal role in assisting police with crowd control, surveillance, and safety.

AI and Eyes in the Sky: The Tech Shield

The backbone of the security strategy is a network of 1,600 cameras connected to the ICCC, monitoring not just the mela grounds but the entire city. Senior Superintendent of Police (Magh Mela) Neeraj Pandey explained that surveillance focuses on three core areas: security, crowd management, and crime prevention.

AI-enabled cameras installed at critical points like ghats, major roads, and bridges provide real-time data on crowd movement and density, particularly at the Sangam. "These cameras send real-time information on crowd movement and assist in assessing crowd density at key locations," Pandey stated. This technology aids in proactive decision-making, though officers emphasize that experienced police personnel remain crucial for final regulation.

Managing the Human Tide on Special Bathing Days

The system's true test will come on the six major bathing festivals: Paush Purnima, Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchmi, Maghi Purnima, and Maha Shivratri. For crowd management, officials will track live feed to analyze crowd flow, identify concentration points, and devise methods to regulate it. "This technique helps us direct the crowd to areas with less congestion," said SP Pandey.

Beyond people, the cameras serve a dual purpose for fire surveillance, with personnel constantly monitoring for signs of smoke or flame. Parking management is also integrated into the system. As lots reach capacity, they are closed, and vehicles are redirected to the next available space, with the principle of filling the nearest lots first to minimize walking distance for pilgrims.

Strategic Planning for Smooth Pilgrim Movement

Considering the seven main routes connecting Prayagraj to other cities, parking arrangements have been strategically planned in all directions. This is designed to ensure smooth traffic flow and efficiently accommodate the massive vehicular influx accompanying the devotees.

The combination of cutting-edge technology and human expertise underscores the administration's comprehensive approach. The ICCC provides data-based evidence that helps police refine their mechanisms in real-time, aiming to ensure a safe and secure environment for what is one of the world's largest periodic religious gatherings.
