Thrissur Pooram Fireworks Cancelled, Kudamattam Scaled Down
Thrissur Pooram Fireworks Cancelled, Kudamattam Trimmed

The Thrissur Pooram, one of Kerala's most grand and vibrant temple festivals, will witness significant changes this year as authorities have decided to cancel all fireworks displays and scale down the famous 'Kudamattam' (exchange of decorative parasols) ceremony. The decision was announced on April 23, 2026, citing safety concerns and logistical challenges.

Fireworks Completely Called Off

According to official announcements, the sample fireworks that were scheduled for April 24 have been fully called off. Additionally, the main fireworks display, which traditionally takes place during the early hours of April 27, will not occur. This marks a rare break from tradition for the festival, which is renowned for its spectacular pyrotechnics.

Kudamattam to Be Scaled Down

While the fireworks have been completely canceled, the iconic 'Kudamattam' ceremony, scheduled for April 26, will proceed but on a reduced scale. The event, where competing temples exchange beautifully decorated parasols, is a highlight of the Pooram. Organizers have decided to limit the number of participants and the duration of the ceremony to ensure safety and crowd management.

Safety Concerns Drive Decision

The decision comes after a review of recent incidents at large public gatherings and concerns over fire hazards. The district administration and temple authorities jointly agreed to prioritize public safety. The scaled-down Kudamattam will still feature the traditional elements but with fewer participants and a shorter route.

Historical Significance

The Thrissur Pooram, celebrated at the Vadakkunnathan Temple, has a history spanning over two centuries. It is known for its grand processions, traditional music, and the competitive display of parasols. The cancellation of fireworks is a significant departure from tradition but has been accepted by many devotees as a necessary precaution.

Local residents and tourists have expressed mixed reactions. While some are disappointed by the missing fireworks, others appreciate the focus on safety. The scaled-down Kudamattam is expected to still draw large crowds, though authorities have urged attendees to follow safety guidelines.

The festival will continue with other traditional events, including the 'Panchavadyam' (orchestra of five instruments) and the 'Elanjithara' (procession of elephants). Organizers hope that the changes will ensure a smooth and safe celebration for all.
