Telangana Chief Minister Aims for Global Sports Hub with Infrastructure Overhaul
In a significant move to elevate Telangana's sporting profile, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday directed state officials to formulate a detailed and comprehensive roadmap for upgrading existing sports facilities and constructing new infrastructure to meet international standards. This initiative is part of the state's ambitious vision to host major global sporting events in the coming years, positioning Hyderabad as a premier destination for athletics and competitions.
High-Level Review Meeting on Sports Development
The chief minister chaired a crucial review meeting focused on sports infrastructure, which was attended by key dignitaries including Sports Minister Vakiti Srihari, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Adviser Vem Narender Reddy, Sports Authority of Telangana Chairman K Shiva Sena Reddy, Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao, and several senior officials. During the session, Revanth Reddy thoroughly assessed the current status of stadiums and other sports facilities across the state, emphasizing the need for modernization and expansion.
Modernization of Key Stadiums and New Projects
Revanth Reddy issued specific instructions to officials to modernize prominent stadiums such as the Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy Stadium, LB Stadium, and Saroornagar Stadium. The upgrades are designed to ensure these venues can accommodate future requirements for training camps and host large-scale sporting events. Additionally, the chief minister reviewed proposals for establishing the Young India Sports University, which is envisioned to feature world-class infrastructure and facilities for multiple sports disciplines.
The chief minister stated, "The state should develop the sports university with all facilities, including training athletes to win medals in the Olympic Games. In addition to renovating the Gachibowli outdoor stadium, establish an indoor stadium, university complex, hostel buildings, all types of sports grounds, and other facilities required for training within the stadium premises."
Design Proposals and Strategic Vision
During the meeting, Revanth Reddy also examined design proposals for upcoming sports complexes and offered valuable suggestions to officials to enhance functionality and aesthetics. He reiterated his earlier ambition to position Hyderabad as a potential venue for certain sporting disciplines if India successfully wins the bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. This goal underscores the urgent need to strengthen and expand sports infrastructure across Telangana.
The chief minister revealed that he had previously discussed this matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to consider Hyderabad as a host city for the prestigious 2036 Olympics. Modi has recently affirmed that India is making strong and concerted efforts to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, aligning with Telangana's proactive steps.
Broader Implications for Sports and Economy
This infrastructure push is expected to not only boost sports development in Telangana but also stimulate economic growth through tourism, job creation, and increased investment in the region. By aiming for international standards, the state government seeks to foster a culture of excellence in sports, nurture local talent, and attract global events that can showcase Hyderabad on the world stage.
The comprehensive plan includes:
- Upgrading existing stadiums to international specifications.
- Building new sports complexes with state-of-the-art amenities.
- Establishing the Young India Sports University as a center of excellence.
- Enhancing training facilities for athletes aspiring to compete in the Olympics.
With these initiatives, Telangana is poised to become a significant player in the global sports arena, leveraging infrastructure development to achieve long-term athletic and economic benefits.
