TDP MP Recalls 'Yaar' Remark and Paper-Throwing Incident in Lok Sabha

TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was presiding over the Lok Sabha proceedings on Tuesday, has provided a detailed account of the incident where opposition MPs threw papers at him. Tenneti revealed that someone from the opposition benches addressed him as "yaar" (friend or buddy), which he found objectionable in the parliamentary setting.

Objection to 'Yaar' Remark Sparks Confrontation

When Tenneti pointed out that addressing the chair as "yaar" was inappropriate, the response from some opposition members was dismissive, questioning what was wrong with the term. "This is not the behaviour one is expected to come up with in Parliament," Tenneti emphasized in his statement to ANI. He was filling in for Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the time.

Following this exchange, the situation escalated as several MPs approached the table and began tearing and throwing papers toward the chair. Tenneti described this action as "again objectionable" and contrary to parliamentary decorum.

Suspension of Opposition MPs

As a consequence of these actions, eight opposition MPs were suspended from the House for the remainder of the Budget session. The suspended members include:

  • Gurjeet Singh Aujla (Congress)
  • Hibi Eden (Congress)
  • C Kiran Kumar Reddy (Congress)
  • Amarinder Singh Raja Warring (Congress)
  • Manickam Tagore (Congress)
  • Prashant Padole (Congress)
  • Dean Kuriakose (Congress)
  • S Ventakesan (CPI-M)

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju moved the resolution for their suspension, citing that the members acted in "utter disregard" of the House and the authority of the Chair. Rijiju noted that they were named by the Chair for their behavior, which included tearing papers and throwing them at the presiding officer.

Escalation and Aftermath

The incident reportedly involved some of the suspended MPs attempting to climb onto the table of the House secretary-general before tearing and throwing papers. The House passed the suspension resolution by a voice vote, after which proceedings were adjourned for the day amid significant uproar.

In response to the suspensions, the Congress party, led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest outside the Parliament building. They expressed strong opposition to the suspension of their party colleagues, highlighting the ongoing tensions within the parliamentary proceedings.

The TDP, to which Tenneti belongs, is a key constituent of the BJP-led ruling NDA, adding a political dimension to the incident amidst the broader context of opposition-government relations in Parliament.
