Parliament Budget Session 2026: Lok Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Protest

The Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 12 noon on Friday, February 13, 2026, as opposition members raised slogans demanding the resignation of Union Minister Hardeep Puri, according to PTI reports. This disruption occurred on the final day of the first phase of the ongoing budget session, highlighting heightened tensions between the ruling BJP and opposition parties.

Key Agenda Items for the Session

The House is scheduled to resume with a tribute to former MP Bhagwan Dass Rathor, who passed away in January 2026. During Question Hour, Union Ministers will respond orally to queries from MPs. Several ministries, including Education, Culture, Health, Home Affairs, Law and Justice, Commerce and Industry, and Textiles, will table official papers as part of the government's business.

Reports and Updates from Committees

The Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture will present its report titled "Holistic Development of India's Tourism Sector through Formal Skill Development, University-Level Courses, and Professional Training for Guides, Hospitality, and Eco-Tourism." Additionally, Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav will provide updates on the implementation of recommendations regarding mental health care and the functioning of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). Union Minister Suresh Gopi will speak on actions taken on recommendations for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Opposition Protests and Political Tensions

Congress MPs staged a protest in the Parliament premises against Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, accusing the government of evading accountability on key issues. The protest is part of a broader confrontation, with frequent disruptions and sharp exchanges in both Houses during the session. Congress leaders alleged that the minister's remarks and the government's stance have undermined parliamentary norms, prompting demands for discussions inside the House.

Controversy Over Rahul Gandhi's Membership

Amid the session, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey filed a notice seeking the termination of Rahul Gandhi's Parliament membership and a lifetime ban from contesting elections. This move has sparked strong criticism from opposition leaders. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut defended Gandhi, calling the move an "attack on democracy" and accusing the government of targeting dissent. Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad also condemned it, stating it weakens democratic freedoms enshrined in the Constitution.

BJP national council member Lanka Dinakar supported Dubey's letter, alleging that Gandhi's conduct does not befit the Leader of the Opposition and accusing him of disrespecting constitutional offices, particularly the Speaker. Dinakar claimed Gandhi made objectionable comments against national interests during post-Budget speeches.

The session is set to reconvene at 12 noon, with ongoing debates expected to focus on these political clashes and the scheduled government business.
