Nagaland Government Explores SAI Takeover for Dimapur Sports Complex Completion
In a significant development regarding infrastructure in Nagaland, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced on Thursday that the state government is actively exploring the possibility of handing over the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex in Dimapur to the Sports Authority of India (SAI). This move is being considered as a strategic solution to overcome financial hurdles and ensure the completion of the remaining construction work, ultimately leading to the facility's full operational utilization.
Addressing Assembly Concerns Over Delays and Funding
The announcement came during the eighth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, where Chief Minister Rio was responding to a pointed question from MLA Nuklutoshi. The MLA had sought detailed clarification on the total funds received for the sports complex project and the underlying reasons for the persistent delays in its completion. Rio provided a comprehensive breakdown, attributing the setbacks primarily to the state's limited financial resources and the phased nature of funding allocations over multiple years.
Financial Constraints Highlighted
Chief Minister Rio disclosed that, to date, the project has received approximately Rs 140 crore in funding. However, the total estimated requirement to bring the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex to full completion is significantly higher, standing at around Rs 267 crore. This substantial figure includes all necessary components such as Goods and Services Tax (GST) and various other associated costs. The glaring gap between funds received and the total needed has been a critical factor in the project's prolonged timeline.
SAI Handover Process Already Underway
In his address to the assembly, CM Rio confirmed that the procedural steps for transferring the Dimapur sports facility to the Sports Authority of India are currently in progress. This potential handover is viewed as a pragmatic approach to leverage SAI's expertise, resources, and national-level support to finalize the construction and subsequently manage the complex for optimal use. The initiative reflects the state government's commitment to finding viable solutions for public infrastructure despite budgetary limitations.
