Political Allies Clash Over Control of Maharashtra Boxing Association
Political tensions flared on Thursday as allies Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party engaged in a heated dispute over the leadership of the Maharashtra Boxing Association. The conflict centers on competing claims from BJP MLC Praveen Darekar and former Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale, both asserting their legitimate presidency of the sports body.
Contradictory Claims and Election Disputes
Praveen Darekar maintains that his panel secured a decisive victory in the November 2025 Maharashtra Boxing Association elections, winning all available seats through a process supervised by the charity commissioner's office in Mumbai. This election was conducted following a specific high court order to resolve the association's pending leadership issues.
"Our election was conducted legally through proper channels," Darekar asserted. "We submitted the list of our elected executive body to the Boxing Federation of India in November last year, but they have yet to grant us official affiliation. The BFI has been deliberately misled about the actual circumstances."
Contrasting this narrative, Rahul Shewale claims that his faction received formal recognition from the Boxing Federation of India just last month. Shewale argues that Darekar's election failed to comply with the National Sports Development Code of India 2011, rendering it invalid for official recognition.
Allegations of Political Motivations
The dispute quickly escalated beyond procedural arguments into personal accusations about political ambitions. Darekar suggested that Shewale's involvement stems from political opportunism rather than genuine interest in boxing development.
"He possesses no substantial exposure to boxing whatsoever," Darekar claimed. "After failing to secure a Rajya Sabha seat, he now views the boxing association as an alternative pathway to reach Delhi and advance his political career through sports administration."
Shewale vehemently rejected these allegations, emphasizing his family's connection to the sport and his established political standing. "Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde provides sufficient support for my political aspirations," Shewale countered. "I don't require sports administration as a stepping stone to Delhi. My son actively participates in boxing, making it completely inaccurate to suggest I lack awareness about the sport."
Broader Pattern of Political Involvement in Sports
This confrontation reflects a longstanding trend in Maharashtra where political figures vigorously compete for leadership positions across various sports associations. These bodies range from cricket and wrestling to football, often serving as platforms for political influence and patronage distribution beyond their sporting functions.
Recent examples include NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar assuming presidency of the Maharashtra State Wrestling Association in 2005, following his involvement in cricket administration. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray currently leads the Mumbai District Football Association, while the late Ajit Pawar was re-elected for a fourth term as president of the Maharashtra Olympic Association in November 2025.
Shewale extended an olive branch amidst the controversy, inviting Darekar to the upcoming U-17 World Boxing Championship in Nagpur. "We should refrain from injecting politics into sports," Shewale stated. "Our association has legitimate recognition, and we're focused on organizing this prestigious international event."
The unresolved leadership dispute highlights the complex intersection of sports administration and political ambition in Maharashtra, with both factions preparing to defend their positions through legal and administrative channels while the boxing community awaits a definitive resolution.
