YSRCP MP Slams Andhra Bill Over Farmer Promises, Funding Gaps

YSRCP MP Strongly Opposes Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill in Parliament

In a significant parliamentary intervention, YSR Congress Party MP and Lok Sabha floor leader PV Midhun Reddy has voiced strong opposition to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, labeling it as "incomplete and lacking clarity on key commitments" to the state. Speaking from Vijayawada, Reddy emphasized that his party is not against any region, including Amaravati, but is demanding comprehensive legislation that addresses long-standing issues.

Critical Issues Overlooked in the Legislation

During the parliamentary debate, Midhun Reddy highlighted that the Bill fails to address several crucial matters that are vital for Andhra Pradesh's development. He expressed deep disappointment that special category status (SCS) and adequate funding for the Polavaram irrigation project—both previously promised on the floor of the House—are conspicuously absent from the legislation. Reddy stressed that any development initiative must be balanced and financially sustainable to benefit all regions equally.

Unfulfilled Promises to Amaravati Farmers Raise Concerns

The YSRCP leader raised serious concerns regarding the Amaravati capital project, pointing out that approximately 34,000 acres of land were pooled from farmers with specific assurances. These promises included the provision of developed plots and various benefits within a fixed timeline. However, Reddy noted that these commitments remain largely unfulfilled, with farmers still awaiting their plots even after several years, causing significant distress and uncertainty.

Questionable Land Acquisition and Financial Transparency

Midhun Reddy questioned the scale of the Amaravati project, revealing that the government already holds about 54,000 acres of land. Despite this substantial holding, the Bill proposes further land acquisition without providing clear details on funding sources. He highlighted that only around Rs 5,000 crore was spent between 2014 and 2019, and although expenditure has continued in recent years, there is no clear roadmap for the project's completion.

Additionally, Reddy flagged concerns over escalating construction costs in Amaravati, stating that per-square-foot costs are significantly higher than those in Delhi. This discrepancy indicates possible financial irregularities and underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability in project execution.

Demands for Clarity and Legislative Action

In his address, Midhun Reddy demanded that the Bill incorporate clear timelines, a defined project scope, and robust protections for farmers' interests. He termed the legislation "meaningless in its current form" and called for comprehensive revisions to ensure it addresses the state's critical needs. In protest against what they described as a poorly drafted Bill, YSRCP MPs staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha, emphasizing their commitment to advocating for Andhra Pradesh's development and the welfare of its citizens.
