The Election Commission of India has reported a record voter turnout of 92.4% in the final phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, accompanied by sporadic incidents of violence across the state. This marks the highest ever participation of voters since Independence, according to the Commission.
Record Voter Turnout
The Election Commission stated that the two phases of polling in West Bengal have witnessed unprecedented voter enthusiasm. The final phase, held on 29 April 2026, saw a turnout of 92.4%, surpassing all previous records. The Commission attributed this to effective voter awareness campaigns and robust security arrangements.
Sporadic Violence Reported
Despite the high turnout, there were reports of sporadic violence in some constituencies. Clashes between political party workers were reported in a few areas, leading to minor injuries. The Election Commission deployed additional security forces to maintain law and order. However, overall polling was largely peaceful.
Political Reactions
Political parties have reacted to the high turnout. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that the turnout reflects people's desire for change, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) stated that it shows support for their governance. Both parties have expressed confidence in their performance.
The Election Commission is now preparing for the counting of votes, scheduled for 2 May 2026. The results will determine the next government in West Bengal.
