Kharge's Controversial Statement
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, during the final leg of the Tamil Nadu election campaign, criticized the AIADMK for aligning with the BJP and targeted Prime Minister Modi. Kharge allegedly referred to PM Modi as a 'terrorist who does not believe in equality'. The remark sparked widespread condemnation from the ruling party.
Kharge's Clarification
Responding to the controversy, Kharge stated, 'I clarified my statement in Chennai,' attempting to downplay the severity of his comment.
BJP Delegation Meets Election Commission
A high-level BJP delegation, including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, met the Election Commission on Wednesday, seeking strict action against Kharge. Rijiju expressed grief and anger, stating that no political party had ever shown such disrespect. 'Calling the Prime Minister of the country a terrorist—you can understand the level of low the Congress has touched in terms of respecting an individual and democracy,' Rijiju said, as reported by ANI. The delegation urged the EC to take strict action and called on Kharge to apologize to the nation.
The Vice President's remarks and the BJP's move highlight the escalating political tension ahead of the elections.
