Vizhinjam Port Success Fails to Secure Votes for LDF in Kovalam Constituency
Vizhinjam Port Success Fails to Secure LDF Votes in Kovalam

The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led state government may have gone all out to promote its successes with the Vizhinjam International Seaport, contrasting it with the perceived inefficiency of the Congress party. However, the people of the Kovalam constituency, where the port is located, seemingly remained unimpressed by these achievements.

Election Results 2026

In a significant political development, Vijay's TVK party has emerged as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, West Bengal election results show Mamata Banerjee lagging behind Suvendu Adhikari after the second round in Bhabanipur. The TVK has pushed both the DMK and AIADMK to the margins, while the BJP may oust Mamata in Bengal but retain Assam.

Kovalam Voters Reject LDF

Voters in Kovalam have re-elected United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate M Vincent, who won by a margin of 32,709 votes. This margin increased tremendously from the approximately 11,000 votes in the 2021 election. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had claimed that securing a concessionaire for the Vizhinjam port, spending around Rs 5,000 crore for its initial phase, and speeding up its final deadline through deft negotiation with the Adani Group was a stellar achievement of fast-tracking an infrastructure project. However, the construction of the port did not yield political dividends for the ruling front.

Vincent attributed his victory to his relationship with the people and the local issues he successfully took up and solved in the constituency. He added, "The anti-people policies of the government played a role." The election results highlight that even major infrastructure projects may not translate into electoral success if local concerns are not adequately addressed.
