Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Challenges Opposition to Debate on Railway Development

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw issued a bold challenge to opposition parties on Sunday, calling for a debate on railway development. He compared the achievements of opposition parties during their 50 years in power with the work accomplished by the BJP-led Central government over the past 12 years. This challenge was made during his address on the sidelines of the groundbreaking ceremony for India's first advanced 3D glass semiconductor packaging unit at Info Valley in Bhubaneswar.

Focus on Railway Expansion in Odisha

Addressing the issue of railway expansion in Odisha, Vaishnaw emphasized that several new rail lines have been sanctioned under the present government, a contrast to what he described as minimal progress in the past. He specifically highlighted the ongoing redevelopment of 59 railway stations across the state, including major hubs in Bhubaneswar and Puri.

The opposition, including the Congress, is asking what the railways has done for Odisha. I want to ask them how many stations they had developed in the last 50 years. They did not develop even five stations during that period. In contrast, the Centre is now redeveloping 59 stations in Odisha, Vaishnaw stated.

Accusations and Counterarguments

Vaishnaw accused the opposition of lacking the moral authority to criticize the Centre's record on railway development in Odisha. He vowed to counter what he termed as misleading narratives with concrete facts and figures. To support his claims, the minister listed major railway projects that have been sanctioned, showcasing the government's commitment to infrastructure growth.

  • Badampahar-Keonjhar (82km)
  • Bangiriposi-Gorumahisani (86km)

Context and Implications

This debate challenge comes amid ongoing political discussions about infrastructure development and governance. Vaishnaw's statements aim to highlight the BJP-led government's proactive approach to railway modernization and expansion, particularly in states like Odisha. By contrasting past and present efforts, he seeks to underscore a narrative of progress and accountability in public service delivery.
