UP Deputy Chief Ministers Laud Historic Women's Reservation Legislation
In Lucknow, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday warmly welcomed the proposed implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, describing it as one of the most momentous days in the nation's history. Maurya emphasized that this landmark legislation represents a transformative step toward gender equality and political empowerment for women across India.
Support for Delimitation Bill and Increased Lok Sabha Seats
Maurya also expressed strong approval for the delimitation bill introduced in Parliament, noting that it would lead to a significant increase in Lok Sabha seats across various states. "We wholeheartedly welcome this progressive decision," he stated, highlighting the BJP's commitment to enhancing democratic representation.
Sharp Criticism of Samajwadi Party's Opposition
Targeting Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav over his reported resistance to the bill, Maurya issued a stern warning. He asserted that those opposing the measure would face consequences from half the population, while the Bharatiya Janata Party would earn the blessings of women voters. Maurya accused Yadav of being fundamentally "anti-women" and claimed he could never genuinely work for their welfare.
Addressing the SP's demand for separate reservation for Muslim women, Maurya clarified that political parties are free to decide internal provisions within their own organizations. However, he insisted they must not obstruct the broader women's reservation legislation, which aims to benefit all women irrespective of community.
Constitutional Principles and Calls for Apology
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also firmly backed the move, explaining that the special session of Parliament had been convened specifically to pass the amended legislation in both Houses and ensure women receive their rightful representation. Launching a counterattack on the Samajwadi Party, Pathak pointed out that the Constitution framed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar does not link reservation with religion.
Pathak further alleged that raising demands for religion-based reservation fundamentally contradicts the spirit of the Constitution. He urged the Samajwadi Party to apologize to the public and instead support the passage of the amended women's reservation bill, emphasizing unity and progress over divisive politics.
Both leaders underscored the BJP's unwavering commitment to women's empowerment and democratic inclusivity, positioning the bill as a cornerstone of social justice and political reform in contemporary India.
