Thackeray Questions Ram Temple Donation Handling
In a sharp critique, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday questioned the management of donations for the Ram temple in Ayodhya, drawing parallels to potential issues in Kashi and Mathura. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, he said, "If this is the state of affairs in Ayodhya, what would happen to Kashi and Mathura?" His remarks came amid reports of alleged irregularities in the collection and use of funds for the temple construction.
CM Fadnavis Responds
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded by saying, "I am happy that Uddhav Thackeray has remembered Lord Ram." Fadnavis added that the state government is committed to transparency in all religious fund drives. The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions between the former allies.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy erupted after a news report claimed that a significant portion of donations collected for the Ram temple was unaccounted for. Thackeray alleged that the trust managing the funds lacked accountability. He urged the central government to ensure proper oversight. The Ram temple trust has denied any wrongdoing, stating that all funds are audited.
Thackeray's comments also referenced the broader Hindutva agenda, suggesting that if the current model fails in Ayodhya, it could undermine similar projects in other holy cities. Political analysts see this as an attempt by Thackeray to position himself as a guardian of Hindu interests while criticizing the BJP-led government.
