In a startling revelation, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA G Saravanan has claimed that he was offered up to Rs 100 crore to join the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He also stated that he has received death threats from unknown individuals for declining the offer.
Saravanan's Allegation
Speaking to reporters in Chennai on Tuesday, Saravanan said, "I was approached by intermediaries who offered me Rs 50 crore initially, which was later increased to Rs 100 crore. They wanted me to switch sides and join the DMK. When I refused, I started receiving death threats." The TVK MLA from the Thiruvallur constituency urged the state and central governments to provide him with security, citing the threats to his life.
Political Context
Saravanan's allegations come amid a period of political realignment in Tamil Nadu, with several smaller parties aligning with the ruling DMK ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has been positioning itself as a third front. The DMK has denied the allegations, with party spokesperson A. Raja calling them "baseless and politically motivated."
Call for Investigation
Saravanan has called for a thorough investigation into the matter, stating that such practices undermine democracy. "This is not just about me. It's about the integrity of our political system. I urge the Election Commission and the police to probe this," he said. He also claimed to have evidence, including audio recordings of conversations with the intermediaries.
Reactions from Other Parties
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seized on the issue, with state president K. Annamalai demanding a probe by central agencies. "This exposes the DMK's desperation to buy MLAs. The public should see through their tactics," Annamalai said. The DMK, however, dismissed the claims as an attempt by TVK to gain sympathy.
Security Concerns
Saravanan added that he has informed the police about the threats but has not received adequate protection. "I have written to the Director General of Police, but no action has been taken. I fear for my safety," he said. The police have stated that they are looking into the matter.
