A Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) election office was set ablaze in Trichy on Wednesday, sparking outrage among party workers. The incident occurred in the early hours, with miscreants allegedly torching the office located in the heart of the city. Party functionaries have lodged a formal complaint at the local police station, demanding immediate and strict action against the culprits.
Complaint Filed, Investigation Underway
According to sources, the TVK workers discovered the fire around 4 a.m. and immediately alerted the fire department. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the flames, but the office sustained significant damage. The complaint, filed by the party's local secretary, names unidentified persons. Police have registered a case under relevant sections and launched an investigation.
Speaking to reporters, a senior police official said, "We are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning locals. Prima facie, it appears to be a deliberate act of arson. We will ensure the perpetrators are brought to book."
Political Reactions
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from TVK leaders, who have accused rival parties of orchestrating the attack. Party president and actor Vijay, who is currently on a campaign trail, expressed deep concern over the incident. In a statement, he said, "Such cowardly acts will not deter us from our path. We will continue to fight for the people of Tamil Nadu."
Meanwhile, TVK has announced that Vijay will visit Velankanni later this week to offer prayers at the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health. The visit is seen as a move to connect with the Christian community ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Trichy has witnessed sporadic political violence in recent weeks, with clashes between supporters of different parties. The Election Commission has been urged to ensure free and fair elections in the region.
