Rebel Faction Names Arup Roy as Chairperson
A faction of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rebels, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, held a special session where they named Arup Roy as the chairperson of what they claim is the 'real' Trinamool Congress. The move directly challenges the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, the party's national chairperson and West Bengal's chief minister.
During the session, the rebels argued that the TMC's national working committee had not been renewed since February 2022, a period of over two years, which they said violates the party's constitution. They asserted that the current leadership is illegitimate and that their faction represents the true party structure.
Leadership Reshuffle and Appointments
Alongside Arup Roy's appointment as chairperson, the rebel faction also named several other office bearers. Firhad Hakim, a prominent TMC leader and Kolkata mayor, was appointed as one of the vice-chairpersons. Other vice-chairpersons and general secretaries were also named, though the full list has not been disclosed.
The rebels claim that these appointments are necessary to restore the party's democratic processes, which they say have been ignored by Mamata Banerjee's camp.
Political Fallout and Defections
The internal crisis comes on the heels of TMC's poor performance in the recent Assembly elections in West Bengal, where the party lost several seats. The situation has been exacerbated by mass defections: according to reports, 20 of the party's 28 Lok Sabha MPs have left the TMC to join other parties, including the Nationalist Congress Party (NCPI).
This exodus has significantly weakened the TMC's parliamentary strength and raised questions about Mamata Banerjee's hold over the party. The rebel faction's formation is seen as an attempt to capitalize on this discontent.
Mamata Banerjee's Response
In response, Mamata Banerjee's camp has submitted petitions to the Lok Sabha Speaker, arguing that the rebels cannot belong to two parties simultaneously. The petitions assert that the faction's actions are unconstitutional and that the rebels are still bound by TMC's official structure.
Mamata Banerjee has not yet made a public statement on the rebel faction, but sources close to her indicate that legal and disciplinary action may follow.
Key Statistics and Timeline
- 20 TMC MPs have defected from the party.
- 28 is the total number of TMC Lok Sabha MPs before the defections.
- The last national working committee formation was in February 2022, according to the rebels.
The crisis is likely to deepen as both sides prepare for a potential legal battle over party symbols and control. The Election Commission may also be called upon to adjudicate on which faction is the legitimate TMC.
