TMC Condemns PM Modi's Jhalmuri Break as 'Photo Ops' Amid Bengal Campaign

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) launched a sharp critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, targeting his impromptu jhalmuri break during a campaign stop in West Bengal's Jhargram. The party asserted that the Prime Minister's decision to prolong his stay for the snack caused Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife, MLA Kalpana Soren, to abort their scheduled campaign for Mamata Banerjee and return to Ranchi.

Social Media Outcry Over Alleged Disrespect to Adivasi Leaders

In a post on social media platform X, the TMC characterized Modi's candid break as mere "photo ops" and accused him of demeaning an Adivasi leader. The party stated, "Narendra Modi's Adivasi-birodhi mindset has been exposed for all to see. Because the 'Pradhan Sevak' decided to extend his stay in Jhargram to eat jhalmuri, Jharkhand Chief Minister Shri Hemant Soren and his wife were denied permission to fly their chopper into Jhargram while Modi was present."

The TMC further elaborated, "Two democratically elected leaders. Grounded. Kept waiting for hours. And ultimately forced to return to Ranchi without completing their scheduled programme, all because a Prime Minister's extended snack break and photo ops took precedence over their democratic rights and constitutional standing. This is the respect Modi has for Adivasi leaders. He came to Jhargram to court the Adivasi vote. He left having humiliated the very people he claimed to stand with. Bengal saw it. And Bengal will remember it on 4th May."

PM Modi's Jhalmuri Break Amid Intense Political Heat

This controversy erupted after PM Modi, on Sunday, took a brief pause from his hectic campaign schedule in West Bengal, where the BJP is mounting a formidable challenge to end Mamata Banerjee's 15-year rule. Following his address in Jhargram, the Prime Minister approached a local jhalmuri stall and requested, "Bhai, hume apna jhalmuri khilao."

As the vendor prepared the popular street snack, Modi engaged in a light-hearted conversation, inquiring about the price and reaching into his Nehru jacket to pay. The vendor asked if he eats onions, to which the PM replied, "Haan, pyaaz khaate hain. Dimag nahi khaate bas."

Campaign Intensity and Political Accusations

PM Modi conducted multiple rallies across Bengal on Sunday, addressing crowds in Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram, and Medinipur, thereby escalating the already fierce contest between the TMC and BJP. In Jhargram, he tackled the collapse of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill 2026, which aimed to increase Lok Sabha seats and implement women's reservation.

Accusing the TMC of being anti-tribal and anti-women, Modi highlighted local issues such as illegal land occupations. He declared, "You gave 15 years to the ruthless TMC government. In these 15 years, what did the ruthless TMC sarkar give you? What did the Adivasi areas get? Na padai, na kamai, na dawai, na sichai... If you have to build even a small house, you have to rely on the TMC syndicate. Be it an MP or MLA of the TMC, they don't care about your problems. These people are just interested in filling up their tijoris. Here, the TMC has encroached upon hundreds of acres of tribal land."

He emphasized that women's empowerment remains a core priority for the BJP, alleging that the TMC regime has deprived women of rights, security, and economic opportunities.

Election Schedule and Broader Implications

Elections for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly are scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with vote counting set for May 4. This incident underscores the heightened political tensions and strategic maneuvers as both parties vie for dominance in the state.

The TMC's allegations reflect ongoing debates over respect for democratic norms and tribal representation, potentially influencing voter sentiment in the crucial upcoming polls.
