CM Stalin Urges BJP Govt to Freeze State Representation for 30 Years
Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday made a strong appeal to the Union BJP government, urging it to maintain the current status of proportional representation of states for the next three decades. In a post on X, Stalin emphasized the need for a constitutional provision to extend the existing system, highlighting its critical importance for federal balance and democratic integrity.
Stalin's Stand on Proportional Representation
"It is our consistent stand that the current proportional representation of states should not be disturbed under any circumstances," Stalin stated. He argued that to achieve this stability, the delimitation and distribution of constituencies among states must be backed by a constitutional guarantee ensuring the same for the next 30 years. This move, according to Stalin, is essential to prevent any arbitrary changes that could undermine state rights and representation.
Criticism of BJP's Electoral Motives
Citing media reports, Stalin pointed out that the BJP government is considering women's representation in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies based on the 2011 Census. He criticized this step, stating it does not align with the BJP's earlier promises or the Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, 2023, which was passed by the Union government. "This is most probably aimed at securing electoral gains in the forthcoming assembly elections in four major states," Stalin alleged, adding that pushing such a significant measure during the model code of conduct is unprecedented and raises serious concerns about political fairness.
Call for Parliamentary Discussion
Stalin demanded that these issues be thoroughly debated in Parliament by convening a special session. "I request that a Special Session of Parliament be convened in early June to enact these historic constitutional amendments for delimitation, increase of seats, continuation of the current share of representation of States, and a guarantee that such representation will continue for the next 30 years," he said. This call underscores his commitment to ensuring transparent and inclusive decision-making on matters of national importance.

Earlier, Stalin had raised a series of questions directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Union government's preparedness measures for the ongoing US-Iran conflict. He expressed skepticism about the government's readiness, stating, "Modi is insisting people to be ready, but the entire nation wants to know whether Modi is ready to save people from the ongoing crisis." This highlights broader concerns about national security and crisis management in the face of international tensions.
