Chief Minister M K Stalin launched a sharp verbal attack on the BJP government at the Centre on Tuesday. He called the Union government a "permanent coronavirus" that continues to affect Tamil Nadu even after the Covid-19 pandemic receded.
Pongal Letter to DMK Cadres
In a letter to DMK cadres extending Pongal wishes, Stalin detailed the challenges faced by the Tamil Nadu government over the last five years. He stated that the state overcame multiple hurdles including the Union government. "TN became the top state in various parameters overcoming second wave of COVID, multiple natural calamities and the Union govt which, like a permanent coronavirus, is waging a vengeful attack on us," Stalin wrote.
Call for Samathuva Pongal
Stalin batted for a 'Samathuva Pongal' in his letter. He emphasized that Tamil Nadu should celebrate a caste and religion free Pongal festival. "May the 2026 Pongal be a joyous Pongal, a Dravidian Pongal, and a victorious Pongal for us," he expressed. The chief minister added that the objective of the Dravidian model government is to bring permanent happiness by breaking barricades created by certain forces.
Alanganallur Jallikattu Announcement
The chief minister also made an important announcement about traditional sports. He revealed that he is set to inaugurate Alanganallur Jallikattu on January 17. This marks the first time Stalin will participate in the Alanganallur Jallikattu event as a chief minister. His last participation in this bull-taming sport was back in 2017.
Chennai Sangamam Festival Details
Stalin will also inaugurate Chennai Sangamam 'Namma Ooru Thiruvizha' at Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore on Wednesday evening. The cultural event will run for four days from Thursday to Sunday across twenty locations in Chennai. Approximately 1,500 artists will participate in the festival. Additionally, seven teams from other Indian states will join the celebrations.
Co-optex Collaboration for Handloom Promotion
DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi spoke to reporters in Chennai about an interesting collaboration. She revealed that Co-optex has joined hands with Chennai Sangamam for the first time to promote handloom products during the event.
"Traditional handloom products and dresses from Co-optex will be showcased in a fashion show," Kanimozhi explained. "The folk artists themselves will serve as models for this unique presentation." The fashion show is scheduled for January 17 evening at the Egmore Museum.
The announcements come as Tamil Nadu prepares for Pongal celebrations. Stalin's strong political statements contrast with the festive cultural programming planned across the state.
